The Music Industry Soccer Six started life at Mile End Stadium, East London. Celebrities including Jarvis Cocker, Damon Albarn, Shed Seven, Apollo440, Gene, Jamiroquai, Nick Moran and Jude Law all turned out.
Apollo 440 achieved mission impossible, beating the Shed Seven team in the final while the unforgettable sight of busty model Lindsey Dawn Mackenzie chasing Pulps’ Jarvis Cocker across the pitch topless made huge national press ! The Stars Came Out To Play and everyone knew that Soccer Six was a bit special.
Back at Mile End Stadium and over 6,000 screaming fans showed up to cheer on the stars.
Right at the height of their chart rivalry Oasis and Blur turned up to settle the score on the pitch. Jarvis Cockers’ Pulp flew in from Hawaii to play, with guest Robbie Williams. This Soccer Six though will always be remembered as the day that Liam Gallagher and Damon Albarn came face to face on the football pitch as Robbie guested for Liam in the Oasis team in their match against Damon’s Blur. But it was rockers Reef that went on to claim victory beating holders Apollo 440 in the final.
The buzz continued throughout ’96 and the demand saw Soccer Six roll across to South London. Lennox Lewis led the way with a young Jamie Theakston in goal and Bradley Walsh in defence. The already legendary afterparties reputation rose as rock n roll heavyweights – and ace footballers - Def Leppard and Iron Maiden joined the party with players from The Cult, The Damned, Sham 69, James, Texas and The Beautiful South also starring.
1997 saw Soccer Six take place in its first Football League stadium. Fulham F.C.’s famous Craven Cottage. The now coveted trophy was up for grabs again and fighting for glory were, Robbie Williams, Bur, The Prodigy, Iron Maiden, Mark Owen, Stereophonics, The Lightning Seeds, The Levellers & Shed Seven.
Damon Albarn’s beloved Chelsea had won the F.A. cup the day before and he turned up on his scooter, nursing an almighty hangover. One swift ‘hair of the dog’ later he led his Blur all-blue team gloriously to the final, beating The Levellers 4-1, that included a hat trick from Iron Maiden’s Steve Harris and a trophy presentation from actor Keith Allen.
Soccer Six returned to its spiritual home of Mile End Stadium to create a festival of football and music. Robbie Williams had assembled a fine a team of musical mercenaries although Blur, James, Ocean Colour Scene, Space, Stereophonics and Supergrass were not going to roll over.
Besides the usual streakers, ‘The Fastest Man in Pop’ sprint saw The Prodigy’s Leeroy and Dom from Reef beaten by a barefoot Finley Quaye who bagged the trophy presented by Cerys Matthews of Catatonia.
But it was the James team that raced to the final, to overcome reigning champions Blur. In true rock ‘n’ roll fashion the new title holders James went on to smash up the trophy with an axe and set fire to it during their celebratory party that invoked our first ever band suspension.
